A 69-year-old man who intervened during a knife attack on police officers by a suspected terrorist shouting “Allahu Akbar” has died in eastern France.

The attack, believed to be an act of Islamist terrorism, occurred on Saturday afternoon in Mulhouse during a demonstration in support of the Congo. Two police officers sustained serious injuries, while three others suffered minor wounds.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as "undoubtedly an act of Islamist terrorism." Authorities identified the suspect as an Algerian man who was already on a terror prevention watchlist, according to the anti-terrorism prosecution office (PNAT).

The suspect, who had been under judicial supervision and house arrest, was also subject to an expulsion order from France, union sources reported.

According to PNAT, the attack took place shortly before 4 p.m., with the assailant shouting "God is greatest" in Arabic while targeting local police officers. Witnesses confirmed to Agence France-Presse that he repeated the phrase multiple times.
