Two Catholic churches in Strasbourg were vandalised by an individual currently being sought by the police, according to Jean Werlen, the municipal councillor responsible for religious relations. On Wednesday, September 25, excrement was thrown on the walls of both Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux and Saint-Jean churches, which are located about a hundred metres apart. Fortunately, the churches have since been cleaned, and no permanent damage was done.
Although no arrests have been made yet, the police are actively searching for the suspect, and a witness has provided a description of the individual, who is believed to possibly have psychiatric issues. Jean Werlen stated that no particular message was found to be linked to the incident. The mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, expressed her serious concern, condemning any attack on freedom of worship. She added, "I trust the police to clarify what happened and maintain public peace and coexistence."
Catholic places of worship have faced repeated attacks over recent weeks. Earlier in September, the Saint-Omer church in Pas-de-Calais was set on fire, causing the church's bell tower to collapse. Fortunately, there were no injuries in the incident.
