Passengers on an ICE train were left in shock after it was halted in Gifhorn (Lower Saxony) and evacuated. The cause: A threat situation involving an Afghan man.
On Tuesday morning, around 9:40 a.m., Deutsche Bahn made an unexpected stop in the Lower Saxony town of Gifhorn (population 43,000) and evacuated an ICE train traveling from Cologne to Berlin.
A 44-year-old Afghan man reportedly created the threat situation by allegedly threatening the train crew with a knife and another dangerous object during the journey.
The man was arrested by police at the stop in Gifhorn. A spokesperson for the Hanover Federal Police confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody by the first responders.
Given the potential presence of a dangerous object on board, the train was evacuated. All 340 passengers were escorted to the station forecourt by police and later continued their journey to Wolfsburg via other public transportation options.
Federal police officers, including two dog handlers with a police dog, conducted a thorough search of the train at Gifhorn station and cleared the situation shortly afterward. At this time, no information was available regarding possible injuries or the number of affected passengers.
Earlier that morning, the same Afghan man had caused a disturbance at Hanover Central Station. He allegedly insulted and threatened the staff of another train after they denied him permission to bring a bicycle onto the ICE train. The federal police had already initiated criminal proceedings for insult and threat before the incident on the ICE 541.
