The Theodor-Haubach-Schule in Hamburg, located in the Altona-Nord district, publishes a school calendar on its website that exclusively lists Islamic holidays alongside school events. The school, which prides itself on promoting "diversity," previously sparked controversy in 2022 when its administration advised parents to avoid discriminatory or gender-specific costumes for Carnival.
The school’s website features a linked calendar titled “THS Events,” which details all school activities while also prominently including Islamic holidays. These include the end of Ramadan on March 30th, the breaking of the fast on March 31st, and the Islamic Feast of Sacrifice from June 4th to June 9th, which involves a ritual slaughter.
Despite highlighting major Islamic celebrations, the calendar omits Christian holidays entirely. There is no mention of Christmas or Easter, nor of Ascension Day in May or Pentecost in early June.
The Theodor-Haubach-Schule previously made headlines in 2022 when it sent a letter to parents ahead of Carnival, urging them to avoid costumes that could be deemed discriminatory. According to Bild, the school had also encouraged parents in 2021 to be mindful of their children’s costume choices.
Again this year, the school issued a similar notice, advising parents to ensure costumes do not “exaggerate various ethnic groups” or reinforce “gender-specific roles.” Instead, children were encouraged to dress “creatively” as a profession or even a plant.
