Authorities in Gelnhausen, a town in Hesse, Germany, have accused four members of a Syrian family, all young men aged 18 to 28, of sexually abusing multiple schoolgirls, aged 11 to 17, at the Barbarossabad outdoor swimming pool. The alleged assaults occurred in the water, with initial reports coming from five girls who informed lifeguards they had been sexually harassed. Despite these serious allegations, pool staff reportedly instructed the girls to return to the pool and to report back only if further incidents occurred, rather than immediately escalating the matter to law enforcement.

The situation came to light on Sunday when three of the four suspects were still present at the pool and were questioned by police, while the fourth had already left the premises. According to Christian Litzinger, the mayor of Gelnhausen, all four individuals are known to local authorities and reside in the Main-Kinzig district. The pool manager, Nils Tischer, explained in an interview with the local outlet Hessenschau that staff did not initially contact police because they could not directly observe the incidents. Instead, they sent the girls back to swim with instructions to report any further issues.

As more girls came forward with similar complaints of sexual harassment, lifeguards eventually notified the police. Authorities are now investigating claims from a total of nine girls, aged 11 to 17, who allege they were inappropriately touched by the group of men in the pool’s whirlpool area. The investigation is ongoing as police work to establish the full details of the incident and determine the appropriate course of action.
