The Al-Ikhlas Mosque in Reutlingen underscores the grave dangers posed by political Islam and the naivety of those in positions of political responsibility. A recently surfaced video, which calls for the killing of non-believers, raises significant concerns. It remains to be seen how swiftly Nancy Faeser and her state security team will address this matter.
The video in question, shared by the news portal Nius, includes a Quranic recitation in the mosque stating: “Kill the idolaters wherever you find them, seize them, and ambush them from every hiding place.” While the mosque acknowledges the video's authenticity, it dismisses the content as lacking "action-guiding character." According to a mosque representative, the recitation reflects the historical context of the 7th century and is merely liturgical. However, critics argue this is a classic example of taqiya, an Arabic term referring to strategic concealment, as orthodox believers consider Quranic verses the eternal and unalterable word of Allah.
Nancy Faeser’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution is reportedly monitoring the mosque, identifying it as part of the Salafist scene.
What makes the situation particularly alarming is that the Al-Ikhlas Mosque is an official partner of the SPD-led city of Reutlingen. Despite its ties to extremist elements, the mosque participates in intercultural initiatives such as the “International Week Against Racism,” the “Open Mosque Day,” and programs supporting refugees. The city administration, however, appears to downplay the issue, stating it will seek clarification on the “context” of the video. But how many more warning signs must appear before decisive action is taken?
Equally concerning is the mosque’s association with figures like Abdelmalek Hibaoui, a former imam and professor at the University of Tübingen. Hibaoui gained attention for attending an Islamist conference in Turkey that promoted a boycott of Israel and maintained links to extremist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. These connections, along with the violent Quranic recitation, highlight serious ideological issues within the community.
This incident not only reflects the challenges posed by radical mosques but also the broader influence of political Islam. Political Islam seeks to merge religious and political agendas, often in ways that conflict with the democratic principles of society. Through religious teachings, institutions like the Al-Ikhlas Mosque may be advancing political objectives that undermine these core values.
Islamism expert Sigrid Hermann emphasizes that the selection of Quranic verses is deliberate, warning that such passages inherently carry a guiding significance for believers. She criticizes attempts to trivialize violent recitations, arguing that if such texts are not to be taken literally, they should not be recited without appropriate reinterpretation.
