An Algerian migrant has been arrested in Germany on charges of setting fire to his asylum accommodation center, resulting in the injury of 16 people.
The blaze broke out on Saturday evening in the attic of a building in Schleiden-Vogelsang, North Rhine-Westphalia, producing flames that reached several meters in height.
According to WDR, around 110 firefighters from Schleiden, Kall, and Hellenthal worked in difficult weather conditions to control the fire. A rescue helicopter was also dispatched, but it was ultimately not required.
The building was completely destroyed, and two neighboring houses were also rendered uninhabitable due to smoke damage and contamination.
A total of 57 residents were evacuated to nearby shelters, while 16 individuals suffered injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation, necessitating hospital care.
The 35-year-old Algerian suspect, who was also a resident of the facility, faces charges including seven counts of attempted murder, serious arson, and causing grievous bodily harm.
Local police have confirmed the suspect’s arrest but have not yet disclosed the motive behind the attack.
This incident marks the second suspected arson attack at the same facility in under a year, with a similar fire occurring in January 2024, also attributed to arson.
Across Europe, there have been multiple instances of asylum seekers setting fire to their own accommodation centers. These attacks are often linked to frustration with living conditions, disputes with fellow residents, and, in some cases, attempts to secure relocation to other EU countries, particularly for migrants in camps in Greece and Italy. A 2020 Remix News report highlighted various examples of asylum seekers burning down their own facilities.
