A shocking case that emerged in September has now moved toward trial, drawing attention across Germany for its disturbing details and alleged extremist motivations. Over the course of three consecutive days, a young man is accused of firing an air rifle at passing vehicles along Federal Highway 16 (B16) near Dillingen an der Donau. According to prosecutors, his intention was not random mischief but a calculated effort to trigger serious road accidents that could result in fatalities.
Investigations later revealed that the suspect, a 22-year-old Turkish national, had reportedly positioned himself by the roadside in camouflage clothing and deliberately targeted moving vehicles. By creating sudden panic among drivers, he allegedly aimed to force them off the road or into collisions. While the gunfire startled multiple drivers, no injuries or fatal accidents occurred, as motorists managed to maintain control of their vehicles. However, the attacks caused significant property damage estimated at over 33,000 euros.
The case took a more serious turn when authorities uncovered possible extremist links. The Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ZET), operating under the Office of the Public Prosecutor General, has since filed charges at the Augsburg Regional Court. The accused now faces 23 counts of attempted murder, along with charges of dangerous interference with road traffic and illegal possession of a firearm.
Further investigations by regional broadcasters revealed that the suspect had been part of an Islamist online chat group where violent ideas and hostile narratives were actively shared. Prosecutors allege that he expressed support for extremist ideologies, including sympathy for the jihadist group ISIS, and reportedly glorified past acts of terrorism such as the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Authorities believe the timing of the incident—around September 11—may have been deliberately chosen, reinforcing suspicions of ideological motivation.
The trial is expected to closely examine both the actions and intent of the accused, particularly in light of the alleged extremist background. While no lives were lost, the case raises serious concerns about radicalization and the potential for violence inspired by extremist beliefs.
