A pro-Palestine march through Berlin's Kreuzberg district on Saturday, despite its relatively small turnout of around 720 participants, demonstrated intense commitment to the cause, leading to clashes with police and 36 criminal investigations.
According to the Berliner Kurier, officers at the demonstration were attacked, with glass bottles thrown at them, leaving eight officers injured by the end of the night. The protesters reportedly chanted "forbidden slogans"—illegal in Germany due to strict speech regulations stemming from its 20th-century history—leading police to expel 95 individuals for making antisemitic remarks.
When police made arrests, other marchers tried to free their fellow protesters, escalating tensions. Later in the evening, authorities attempted to shut down the march early, but many demonstrators resisted, forcing police to push them out of the area.
Around 35 protesters regrouped later that night and clashed with police when ordered to disperse, with one individual attempting to seize an officer’s weapon. In a Sunday press conference, authorities announced they had opened 36 criminal investigations, including charges of attempted aggravated theft of a firearm, assaulting police, aiding in the escape of a detainee, using symbols of banned organizations, and inciting hatred.
