Last Saturday, around 12:45 AM, two men (26, 28) were walking on Augsburg’s Maximilianstraße (Germany) when they were verbally attacked by a group of adolescents, leading to a physical altercation. The group of men knocked both victims to the ground and continued to kick them, including in the head and upper body, as reported by the police. The attackers then fled, but a swift manhunt resulted in the arrest of two suspects (22, 23), both with blood alcohol levels exceeding 1.2 per mille.
One of the victims later shared with the local newspaper that he feared for his life as the perpetrators kicked him while he was on the ground. The attackers allegedly called them "faggots."
Halid S., however, was not among those arrested that night and has since gone into hiding. He holds dual German, Turkish, and Lebanese citizenship.
Both victims were treated at Augsburg University Hospital that night, with one initially requiring intensive care. Their injuries included concussions, bruises to the head, shoulder, back, and chest, and facial wounds.
The Augsburger Allgemeine now reports that the incident is believed to have been motivated by anti-gay sentiment. One of the suspects is already a convicted violent offender: Halid S., at 17, is accused of beating firefighter Roland S., 49, to death in December 2019 at Augsburg’s Königsplatz. Halid S. had previously been involved in drug-related offenses and assaults. In November 2020, he was sentenced to four years and six months in prison for manslaughter. He had only recently been released.
