Authorities in Thailand have significantly intensified security across three major tourist provinces following a series of explosive devices planted at multiple popular destinations earlier this week, including a high-profile incident at Phuket International Airport.

According to reports from Thai media, two suspects — identified as 29-year-old Muhamah and 27-year-old Sulaiman — have been apprehended in connection with the planting of bombs at 11 separate locations. The men are believed to be affiliated with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), a well-known Islamist separatist organization that has operated in Thailand’s southern regions for decades.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured the suspects placing the devices between June 21 and June 23. Alarmingly, several of the explosive devices remained active and undiscovered for days before being neutralized, raising serious concerns about the efficiency of local security infrastructure.

Between June 24 and June 26, three suspicious devices were successfully identified and destroyed in three iconic locations: Phuket International Airport, the popular tourist beach of Patong, and the scenic viewpoint of Laem Phromthep. Thai newspaper Khaosod reported that the devices were not packed with shrapnel or lethal components, but were instead designed to create loud noises resembling explosions — a tactic aimed at generating widespread panic rather than causing physical injuries.

Authorities believe the orchestrated bomb scare was intended to disrupt the tourism industry and instill fear among both locals and international visitors. In response, security agencies have stepped up patrols, increased surveillance efforts, and begun reevaluating emergency protocols at all key tourist hotspots across the region.

With tourism being a vital pillar of Thailand’s economy, especially in provinces like Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga, officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all travelers while closely monitoring any further threats from separatist groups.
