A Jewish man in Paris was assaulted by two individuals who, according to him and his legal team, attempted to rape him after seeing a photo of the Israeli flag on his phone.
Authorities in Seine-Saint-Denis, a northeastern suburb of Paris, have reportedly opened an investigation involving two suspects, aged 16 and 19, both allegedly of Algerian origin.
The 22-year-old victim recounted to Le Parisien that he was able to escape only due to intervention from nearby passersby who responded to his screams.
Noam, whose name has been changed, said he was leaving work and heading to a tobacconist when the two men approached him, asking for a cigarette.
After he offered them a pack, they allegedly pushed him aside and took his phone, scrolling through his Instagram feed until they found a post featuring an Israeli flag and a rainbow, symbols he shared to represent his Jewish and gay identities.
The men then began shouting slurs, calling him a “dirty f*ggot” and a “dirty Jew,” Le Parisien reported.
The younger assailant allegedly restrained him against a truck and attempted to undress him, while Noam said he pleaded for them to stop, fearing they might be armed.
Alerted by his cries, passersby intervened, holding the attackers until the police arrived.
“It was a triple punishment,” Noam told Le Parisien. “I was an easy target because I’m gay, because I’m Jewish…”
The two suspects reportedly told police that Noam had approached them with the intention of initiating a sexual encounter.
Both individuals, known to Parisian authorities for previous thefts, are reportedly of Algerian descent.
