A fashion show held on the snowy slopes of a ski resort in India’s Muslim-majority Kashmir region during Ramadan has sparked criticism for not being sensitive to local customs.
The Indian fashion label Shivan & Narresh, celebrating their 15th anniversary, hosted the event on Friday, featuring a dozen models to showcase their new holiday and skiwear collections.
Photos and videos from the show quickly spread on social media, provoking outrage among locals who deemed it “obscene,” particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed understanding of the public's reaction, noting the organisers' apparent lack of awareness of local sensitivities.
He announced that his office was gathering a detailed report on the issue and promised appropriate action. “The shock and anger are completely understandable. The images I've seen show a blatant disregard for local sensitivities, especially during this holy month,” he wrote on X.
“My office has already contacted local authorities and requested a report within the next 24 hours. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the report.”
Shivan & Narresh responded with an apology, expressing regret for any “unintended discomfort” caused by the event.
“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan. Our intention was solely to celebrate creativity and the ski & après-ski lifestyle, without any intent to offend anyone or their religious beliefs,” the statement said.
“Respect for all cultures and traditions is at the core of our values, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologize for any unintended discomfort and value the feedback from our community.”
