A 23-year-old man has appeared before a Dublin court in connection with a violent incident that occurred in the heart of the city earlier this week, during which a Garda officer was stabbed while on duty.

The attack took place on Capel Street on Tuesday, 29 July, as the injured officer — a probationer — was conducting a high-visibility patrol alongside a fellow Garda. The young officer sustained injuries during the altercation, prompting a swift legal response.

The accused has been identified as Abdullah Khan. However, by order of the court, his residential address has been withheld from the public domain due to security concerns raised by his defence team.

Khan faces two criminal charges: one of assault causing harm to a Garda officer, and a second charge of producing a knife capable of inflicting serious injury during the incident.

Detective Sergeant McLaughlin informed the court that there would be objections to granting bail, though Khan’s defence solicitor, Ms. Colleen Gildernew, stated they were not seeking bail at this time. Judge Treasa Kelly instructed that Gardaí must be given 24 hours' notice should a bail application be made in the future.

Ms. Gildernew requested that her client receive appropriate medical care while in custody. She also appealed for reporting restrictions to be imposed on the publication of his address, citing concerns over Khan’s personal safety. In addition, she indicated her intent to submit a statement outlining her client’s financial status in the coming week.

Judge Kelly acknowledged the request, officially directing that Mr. Khan’s address remain confidential. She also granted him free legal aid and ordered his continued detention. The accused has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear at Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday.
