A serious security concern has emerged ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) reportedly issued a message encouraging lone-wolf extremists to exploit the tournament as an opportunity to carry out attacks that could result in large-scale casualties among spectators and participants.

The threat has prompted concerns that authorities responsible for safeguarding the event may need to strengthen security arrangements. ISIS allegedly urged individual extremists to create disruption and violence that could endanger both fans and players during the month-long competition.

According to reports, ISIS circulated a message calling on supporters to closely observe large gatherings associated with the tournament and consider launching attacks where crowds are concentrated. The message reportedly stated that the event would provide numerous opportunities due to the large number of people expected to attend matches and related activities.

The extremist group also outlined potential methods for carrying out attacks. One suggestion involved deliberately starting fires in crowded stadium sections to trigger panic and stampedes, potentially leading to significant injuries and loss of life.

In its propaganda, ISIS attempted to justify its call for violence by claiming that the World Cup promotes values it considers contrary to its interpretation of Islam. The group also targeted football players and participating teams in its rhetoric, portraying them as symbols of what it views as harmful cultural influences.

The message further urged supporters to intensify efforts against Western nations, particularly the United States, while framing such actions as part of its broader extremist agenda. Security agencies continue to monitor such threats closely as preparations for the tournament progress.
