The Yemeni terrorist group claimed responsibility for attempting to launch two drones targeting Israel. “The Houthis assert they launched two drones aimed at Ashkelon and the Tel Aviv area. However, there were no reports of impacts in either city today,” The Times of Israel reported on December 23.

This attempted drone attack followed a ballistic missile and drone strike by the Yemen-based jihadist group on Saturday. In the early hours of the morning, a Houthi missile struck a children’s playground in Tel Aviv, injuring dozens of Israeli civilians. “A missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi jihadists overnight Friday detonated in a public park in south Tel Aviv after Israeli air defenses failed to intercept it, causing 16 minor injuries from glass shards,” i24NEWS reported. “Another 14 people suffered bruises while rushing to shelters.”

Since October 7, the Yemeni terrorist group has reportedly launched approximately 400 missiles and drones at Israel, with most intercepted by Israeli air defenses. In July, a Houthi drone strike on Tel Aviv killed a 50-year-old civilian. In response, the Israeli Air Force conducted multiple retaliatory strikes on Yemen, targeting terrorist bases, ports, and oil facilities, which serve as vital revenue sources for the jihadist group.

Since October 7, 2023, the Iran-backed Houthis have also sought to enforce an illegal blockade on Israel by attacking and seizing Western-owned cargo ships in the Red Sea. “To date, the Houthis have carried out over 100 attacks on commercial and military vessels since November 2023, issuing new shipping restrictions at each phase of their campaign,” the Washington Institute reported on December 18.
