A shocking incident unfolded in the northern Italian city of Modena when a man drove a car into a crowd, injuring at least eight people, according to police officials. Authorities confirmed that four of the injured remain in serious condition, raising concerns over the motive behind the attack.

The driver, identified as a 30-year-old man born in Bergamo and reportedly of North African origin, had recently moved to the province of Modena. Following the crash, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee the scene after his vehicle smashed into a shop window.

According to Modena Mayor Massimo Mezzetti, several bystanders intervened to stop the fleeing suspect. During the confrontation, the man reportedly attacked one pedestrian with a knife, causing minor injuries before being subdued and later arrested by police.

Preliminary reports from Italy’s Interior Ministry revealed that the suspect had been receiving treatment for psychiatric disorders. However, officials have not yet disclosed a clear motive or determined whether terrorism played any role in the attack.

Among the victims, four were reported to be in critical condition, with two airlifted to a hospital in Bologna for urgent medical treatment.

Mayor Mezzetti stated that early evidence suggests the driver may have intentionally mounted the sidewalk, striking multiple pedestrians in what appears to have been a deliberate act. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
