A train conductor in Italy was critically wounded on Monday after being attacked by two young men of North African descent on a regional train in Genoa Rivarolo. The assault has led to a nationwide strike by railway unions, protesting the rising violence faced by workers.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on the Genoa Brignole-Busalla route, aboard regional train 12042, when the 44-year-old conductor was conducting a routine ticket check.

The two suspects, reportedly without tickets, launched the attack during the inspection. One of them, a 21-year-old Egyptian man, allegedly used a knife to stab the conductor twice. The other, a 17-year-old minor with Italian citizenship, also of North African origin, participated in the assault. Both suspects fled the scene but were quickly apprehended by police, aided by passenger descriptions.

The conductor, severely injured, was rushed to Villa Scassi hospital. Train services were temporarily suspended while emergency responders and police dealt with the situation.

In response to the attack, six major trade unions announced an eight-hour national strike for all railway workers, set to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The unions condemned the “frequent and violent attacks” on staff and highlighted the lack of adequate protection for railway workers.
