According to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), the FBI arrested three men on Friday for allegedly conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State (ISIS).
The suspects — Bisaam Ghafoor, 21, Elias Shamsaldeen, 21, and Bereen Dzayee, 25 — were taken into custody after a criminal complaint was filed in the District of Kansas. Authorities allege that the trio collectively transferred more than $2,000 in cryptocurrency to an individual believed to be affiliated with ISIS.
Investigators determined that the allegations were substantiated, with evidence indicating that the funds were used to support ISIS operations, including the acquisition of drones, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and other weapons reportedly involved in attacks that killed U.S. military personnel overseas.
Following the arrests, federal authorities uncovered a series of disturbing messages exchanged among the suspects, which were detailed in the DOJ report.
According to investigators, Ghafoor allegedly remarked that it would be “sick” if his name were written on a drone used in an attack against Americans. Dzayee reportedly suggested that U.S. Special Forces should be targeted by drone strikes. In other communications, Shamsaldeen allegedly expressed a desire to stab and injure a U.S. servicemember. Ghafoor is also accused of stating that he had long wanted to kill a female soldier by beheading and wrote, “I wish I could kill 300,000,000 Americans.”
