India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the country's highest ever GST (Goods and Services Tax) collection in April, highlighting the success of the government's tax reform measures.
According to official figures released by the finance ministry, the GST collection in April 2023 stood at INR 1.41 lakh crore, the highest ever since the introduction of the tax in 2017. This was a significant increase compared to the collection of INR 1.02 lakh crore in April 2022.
The PM took to Twitter to express his happiness over the milestone, stating that the record GST collection was a testimony to the resilience and strength of the Indian economy. He further added that the GST has helped in formalising the economy and improving tax compliance.

The finance ministry also attributed the high GST collection to the economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic and the improved compliance by taxpayers due to various measures taken by the government, such as the introduction of e-invoicing and the use of technology to track tax evaders.
Experts have also lauded the government's efforts in simplifying the GST structure and reducing the compliance burden on taxpayers. The recent reduction in GST rates on COVID-related items has also been seen as a positive step towards ensuring affordability and accessibility of healthcare services during the pandemic.
The GST was introduced in India in 2017 as a major tax reform, replacing various indirect taxes levied by the central and state governments. The tax aims to create a unified market across the country and improve tax compliance, making it easier to do business in India.
Overall, the highest ever GST collection in April is a positive sign for the Indian economy and demonstrates the success of the government's tax reform measures. The focus now should be on continuing to simplify the tax structure, reduce the compliance burden, and promote economic growth in the post-pandemic period.
