Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to develop smart cities in India is known as the Smart Cities Mission. Launched in June 2015, this mission aims to transform and modernize 100 cities across the country.
The Smart Cities Mission focuses on leveraging technology, infrastructure development, and improved quality of life for citizens. The objective is to make cities more sustainable, efficient, and livable by integrating digital technologies and intelligent systems into various aspects of urban life.

Here are some key features and objectives of the Smart Cities Mission:
Technology and Infrastructure: The mission emphasizes the use of information technology, communication, and other digital solutions to improve urban infrastructure, including transportation, energy, waste management, and water supply.
Citizen-Centric Approach: The mission adopts a citizen-centric approach, giving priority to the needs and aspirations of the residents. It encourages citizen participation and engagement in decision-making processes.
Area-Based Development: Instead of a city-wide approach, the mission focuses on the development of specific areas within selected cities. These areas, known as Smart City Zones, are transformed into showcases of urban innovation and sustainability.
Sustainable Development: The mission promotes sustainable practices, including the use of renewable energy, efficient resource management, green building design, and waste reduction and recycling.
Integrated Command and Control Centers: The establishment of Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCCs) enables city authorities to monitor and manage various urban services and infrastructure in real-time. These centers use data and analytics to improve efficiency and response times.
Public-Private Partnerships: The Smart Cities Mission encourages public-private partnerships to attract investment, expertise, and innovation from the private sector. This collaboration helps in the implementation of smart city projects and ensures their long-term sustainability.
Economic Development: The mission aims to foster economic growth and employment opportunities within the smart cities. It focuses on creating an ecosystem that supports entrepreneurship, innovation, and the development of industries and businesses.

Since its launch, the Smart Cities Mission has witnessed the implementation of various projects across different cities in India. These include the deployment of smart grids, intelligent transportation systems, smart street lighting, e-governance platforms, and the adoption of various digital services for citizens.
It is important to note that my knowledge cutoff is in September 2021, so there might be additional developments or progress in the Smart Cities Mission since then.
