Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Digital India campaign in 2015 with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The mission aimed to leverage the power of technology and digital platforms to bridge the digital divide, improve access to digital services, and empower citizens.

The key objectives of the Digital India campaign include:
Broadband Connectivity: The mission aimed to provide high-speed broadband connectivity to all parts of the country, including rural and remote areas. It focused on the establishment of the National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN), which has been rebranded as BharatNet, to connect over 250,000 gram panchayats (village-level administrative units) with broadband connectivity.
E-Governance: Digital India emphasized the use of technology to streamline government processes, enhance transparency, and make public services accessible to citizens. Initiatives like MyGov.in, e-governance portals, and digitization of government records aimed to improve service delivery, reduce corruption, and foster citizen participation.
Digital Infrastructure: The mission recognized the need for robust digital infrastructure to support the growing digital economy. It focused on the establishment of data centers, cloud computing facilities, and the National Knowledge Network (NKN) to provide a reliable and secure digital infrastructure for various sectors.

Various initiatives like the National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) and Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (DISHA) were launched to provide digital literacy training to individuals, especially in rural areas.
Universal Access to Mobile Connectivity: The mission aimed to improve mobile connectivity across the country, ensuring that every citizen has access to affordable and reliable mobile communication services. It focused on expanding the reach of mobile networks and promoting the adoption of mobile technology.
Information for All: Digital India emphasized the availability of government services and information online, making them accessible to all citizens. It aimed to digitize government records and documents, create digital repositories of knowledge, and promote open data initiatives for transparency and innovation.
Innovation and Startups: The mission recognized the importance of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the digital space. Initiatives like Startup India and the Atal Innovation Mission aimed to nurture a vibrant startup ecosystem, encourage digital entrepreneurship, and promote the development of innovative solutions.
