Mission Swachh Bharat, or the Clean India Mission, is a nationwide cleanliness campaign launched by the Government of India on October 2, 2014. It was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the aim of achieving a clean and hygienic India.
The main objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission are:
Elimination of open defecation: The mission focuses on providing every household in India with a toilet facility to eliminate the practice of open defecation. It aims to improve sanitation and promote hygiene practices to prevent diseases caused by poor sanitation.
Solid waste management: The mission emphasizes the effective management of solid waste through the construction of sanitary landfills, recycling facilities, and waste treatment plants. It encourages proper waste segregation, collection, and disposal to maintain cleanliness in cities and villages.
Infrastructure development: Swachh Bharat Mission aims to build infrastructure such as community and public toilets, waste management systems, and sewage treatment plants. It also promotes the construction of individual household toilets to ensure sanitation facilities for all.
Behavioral change: The mission seeks to bring about a behavioral change in people's attitudes and practices regarding cleanliness and hygiene. It encourages individuals to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, promoting cleanliness as a social norm.
Awareness and education: Swachh Bharat Mission focuses on creating awareness about sanitation and hygiene through campaigns, education programs, and mass media. It aims to educate people about the health hazards associated with poor sanitation and the benefits of maintaining cleanliness.

Since its launch, the Swachh Bharat Mission has made significant progress in various areas. Millions of toilets have been constructed, leading to a considerable reduction in open defecation. Several cities and towns have implemented solid waste management systems, and efforts have been made to raise awareness and change people's behavior.
The mission has received participation from various stakeholders, including the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporates, and citizens. It has also gained international recognition and support, contributing to the global agenda of sustainable development and improved sanitation.
Overall, Swachh Bharat Mission is an ambitious initiative that aims to create a cleaner and healthier India by focusing on sanitation, hygiene, and waste management. It is a long-term effort that requires continued dedication and collective participation to achieve its goals.
