A Yemeni man, arrested on suspicion of attempting to leave Canada to join a terrorist group in the Middle East, has been released on bail and is now under house arrest at a mosque in Toronto.
According to a release order from an Ontario judge obtained by Global News, Husam Taha Ali Al-Sewaiee must “reside at the mosque” located in Toronto’s North York area.
He is prohibited from leaving the mosque unless accompanied by someone, must wear an ankle monitor, surrender his travel documents, and maintain a distance of at least 300 metres from airports and border crossings.
The $1,000 bail bond for Al-Sewaiee’s release was posted by an individual whose phone number matches that of the same mosque, though any relationship between them was not disclosed.
A Yemeni citizen who has been present at Gaza protests in Toronto, Al-Sewaiee was first arrested by Peel Regional Police in Mississauga on April 15 for uttering threats.
Four days later, the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team took him into custody, alleging he had attempted to leave Canada to join a terrorist organization.
While the RCMP did not specify which group, sources told Global News it was an Iranian-backed faction. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, known for disrupting international shipping, receive support from Iran.
