Namami Gange Yojana, also known as the National Mission for Clean Ganga, is an ambitious initiative launched by the Government of India in 2014 to clean and rejuvenate the River Ganga. The Ganga, considered sacred by millions of Indians, is one of the most important rivers in the country and faces severe pollution and degradation due to various factors.
The primary objective of the Namami Gange Yojana is to restore and maintain the cleanliness and ecological integrity of the Ganga River Basin. The initiative aims to address various aspects related to the river's pollution, including wastewater management, solid waste management, industrial pollution, and riverfront development.

Key features and components of the Namami Gange Yojana include:
Sewerage Infrastructure: The construction and rehabilitation of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and sewage infrastructure in cities and towns along the Ganga River. This aims to treat and manage the domestic wastewater before it enters the river.
River Surface Cleaning: The initiative focuses on cleaning the river surface to remove floating solid waste, debris, and other pollutants. Methods such as mechanized cleaning, regular monitoring, and deployment of trash skimmers are employed for this purpose.
Industrial Effluent Monitoring: Strict monitoring and regulation of industrial effluents discharged into the river. Industries are encouraged to adopt cleaner production technologies and practices to reduce pollution.
Afforestation and Biodiversity Conservation: Plantation of trees and restoration of the riparian ecosystem to prevent soil erosion, improve water quality, and promote biodiversity conservation in the Ganga River Basin.
Public Awareness and Participation: The Namami Gange Yojana emphasizes the involvement of local communities, NGOs, and other stakeholders in creating awareness about the importance of a clean Ganga and seeking their active participation in the conservation efforts.
Riverfront Development: The initiative focuses on the holistic development of riverfront areas by creating public amenities, promoting tourism, and enhancing the aesthetic value of the riverbanks.
The Namami Gange Yojana has been implemented through the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), which acts as the implementing and coordinating body for various projects and activities under the program. The central and state governments, as well as international organizations, are involved in the funding and execution of different projects under the initiative.
The Namami Gange Yojana is an ongoing effort and aims to achieve the sustainable rejuvenation of the Ganga River, ensuring its ecological and cultural significance for future generations.
