The head of the Dutch National Police has voiced strong outrage and concern after a police officer was forced to go into hiding with his family following a wave of death threats linked to a controversial arrest in Utrecht.

Janny Knol, First Chief Commissioner of the Dutch National Police, revealed on LinkedIn that the threats had become so severe that the officer and his family were compelled to temporarily leave their home and stay at an undisclosed location for their own safety.

“A police officer and his family are temporarily living elsewhere due to threats. Let that sink in — a police officer who works every day to keep society safe,” Knol wrote, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the personal toll on law enforcement families.

The threats stem from a chaotic arrest that took place on January 26 in Utrecht, footage of which quickly spread across social media platforms in the Netherlands. The widely shared video shows the arrest of a veiled Muslim woman spiralling into a physical confrontation, drawing intense public attention and controversy.

According to reports, during the arrest, a friend of the suspect followed closely behind the officer and the woman being detained, filming the encounter on her mobile phone. As she moved increasingly close, the officer kicked her, reportedly in an attempt to create distance and prevent interference.

Moments later, another woman — who had reportedly been walking nearby laughing loudly and may have been connected to an alleged shoplifting incident — struck the officer with her bag. In response, the officer used his baton to strike her, further escalating the confrontation.

The footage has since ignited a fierce national debate. Supporters of the officer argue that he was attempting to maintain control in a rapidly deteriorating situation and that accusations of racism are being made unfairly. Critics, however, accuse the officer of using excessive force and engaging in discriminatory behavior, intensifying scrutiny of police conduct and accountability.

As emotions ran high, the situation took a more dangerous turn when the officer’s personal information was allegedly shared online. This exposure led to a surge in threats, raising serious concerns about his and his family’s safety.
