Grief and deepening fear have enveloped Christian communities in Guma County of Benue State after a fresh wave of brutal attacks left at least four people dead and several others traumatised. The renewed violence has further unsettled residents who were already living under the shadow of repeated assaults in the region.

According to local accounts, several women were abducted during the attacks and subjected to severe torture, while at least one person remains missing. The incidents have intensified anxiety across the area, particularly among families who had already been displaced by earlier episodes of violence and were seeking safety away from their ancestral homes.

The killings occurred just days after Iowa-based missionary Judd Saul, founder of Equipping the Persecuted, issued a public terror alert warning of imminent attacks on Christian communities across Nigeria’s Middle Belt in the lead-up to Christmas. His warning has now taken on grim significance as communities grapple with the aftermath of the bloodshed.

Reports indicate that the latest attacks unfolded along the Yogbo–Udei axis and other known flashpoints in Guma County, which borders Keana and Obi counties in neighbouring Nasarawa State. Residents allege that armed Fulani ethnic militia deliberately targeted internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had taken refuge in the area after fleeing previous rounds of violence.

Speaking to TruthNigeria, Tivta Samuel, the Guma County Youth Leader, provided a harrowing account of one such incident. He said that on Monday, December 15, 2025, around 20 armed assailants ambushed a group of IDPs who had gone to collect firewood at Tse-Nyamkume village along the Yogbo–Udei Road. One of the victims, Kenneth Gbayier, an indigene of Mbalagh who had earlier fled his home in search of safety, was killed during the ambush. His body was later recovered and buried by his relatives.

Tivta further alleged that the attackers, who were speaking Fulfulde and chanting “Allahu Akbar,” deliberately targeted women during the raid. Several women were reportedly seized and tortured before being released, while others have yet to be accounted for. The brutality of the assault has driven many families to abandon their temporary shelters and flee deeper into surrounding bush areas out of fear for their lives.

He also recalled an earlier attack that took place on Saturday, December 13, when another group of armed Fulani militants reportedly struck along Ajimaka Road in Guma. That incident claimed the lives of two Tiv commuters, along with a security operative who was escorting them.

Together, these attacks underscore the growing insecurity in parts of Benue State, where displaced communities continue to face violence despite having already lost their homes and livelihoods. As fear spreads and displacement worsens, residents are once again calling for urgent intervention to protect vulnerable civilians and prevent further bloodshed.
