November 15, 2024 | Nigeria (International Christian Concern) — On November 8, while harvesting rice with his family in Gidan Waya, Jama’a County, Kushuwai found himself living through a harrowing nightmare.
Muslim extremists, believed to be Fulani militants, launched an attack on his farming community, killing four Christians and leaving several others critically injured. This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting farmers in Southern Kaduna, a region increasingly plagued by insecurity.
“They came in large numbers, armed with guns, knives, and machetes,” Kushuwai recounted, his voice laden with sorrow. “Without firing a single shot, they surrounded us. My son pleaded for our lives, but they attacked him instead. My daughters and the other women managed to flee, while I was struck down as I tried to protect him.”
Kushuwai survived but suffered severe injuries, while his son was brutally killed. The assailants, suspected to be Fulani militants, looted the harvested rice and other belongings before continuing their spree of violence at another nearby farm.
The horrors didn’t end there. Later that night, the attackers invaded the home of Danlami Kukur, killing him and abducting his daughter. Before her eventual release, the extremists subjected her to repeated sexual assaults.
Friday Daro, a resident of one of the targeted farming communities, spoke about the deep emotional and psychological scars left by these attacks, especially on women and children.
“Victims of sexual violence often endure stigma and trauma, making recovery an uphill battle,” Daro said. “We urgently need Christian organizations to pray for us and provide support in these challenging times.”
