A man is set to stand trial for the murder of a woman in the Republic of Ireland and for possessing material likely to aid terrorists.

Habib Shah Shamel, 28, formerly of Cecil Street in Limerick, appeared in Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday, having been held in Maghaberry Prison on remand for nearly two years. He faces charges related to the murder of Geila Ibram on April 4, 2023.

The 27-year-old victim's mutilated body was found at an apartment block in the Dock Road area of Limerick. Police reported that Ms. Ibram, originally from Romania, died from multiple stab wounds to the neck, face, and abdomen in what was described as a "brutal and frenzied attack."

Shamel, an Afghan national, was arrested later in the Malone area of south Belfast. He is charged with Ms. Ibram’s murder under the Criminal Jurisdiction Act 1975, which permits the PSNI to prosecute in Northern Ireland if the suspect has come from another jurisdiction.

Earlier court hearings suggested that Shamel had arranged a “sexual exchange” with Ms. Ibram on the day of her death. CCTV footage allegedly showed him arriving at her property, then leaving within two minutes.

The prosecutor stated, “In his possession was a USB device containing substantial material related to Islamic terrorism.”

In Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday, Shamel’s defence lawyer, Niall Hunt KC, requested an adjournment for the arraignment on both the murder and terrorism charges, explaining that no interpreter was present to translate the charges due to Shamel’s “very limited English.”

Prosecutor Mr. McDowell commented, “We allege that the terrorism charge is the motive for the murder charge.”

When asked by Mr. Justice O’Hara if there was a direct connection between the two charges, Mr. McDowell confirmed, “Yes, motive.”
