Palestinian Islamic Jihad Expands Influence in the West Bank as Hamas Concentrates on Gaza

With Hamas currently constrained by a range of political limitations and sustained military pressure, a strategic opening has emerged in the West Bank. According to analysts and former officials cited by The Times of Israel, Palestinian Islamic Jihad — widely regarded as the most significant armed faction after Hamas — has intensified its recruitment drives and expanded its propaganda network across the territory.

As Hamas grapples with continuous operations by the Israel Defense Forces and shifts much of its strategic focus toward Gaza, its engagement in the West Bank has diminished. This has created a vacuum, particularly in the northern West Bank, where the authority and enforcement capacity of the Palestinian Authority are comparatively weaker. Islamic Jihad has moved to capitalize on this environment, strengthening its foothold and asserting greater operational presence in areas where governance and security structures are fragile.

Unlike Hamas, Islamic Jihad is more directly aligned with Iranian backing, operates through a more decentralized structure, and does not bear the responsibilities or constraints of governance. Free from administrative burdens and political calculations tied to ruling territory, the group can focus almost exclusively on militant activity. Analysts warn that if Islamic Jihad continues consolidating influence in the West Bank, it could pose a more covert and complex security challenge for Israel — potentially harder to contain due to its ideological rigidity, external patronage, and operational flexibility.
