At least 30 people lost their lives in a violent attack carried out by unidentified gunmen on Palm Sunday in Ungwan Rukuba, a community located in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. The assault, which unfolded in the evening hours, has left the region in shock and heightened tensions across affected communities.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the area in a coordinated manner and opened fire indiscriminately on residents. The sudden outbreak of violence resulted in multiple casualties, with several homes reportedly damaged during the attack. Survivors described scenes of chaos as people fled for safety amid continuous gunfire.
In response to the incident, the Plateau State government swiftly imposed a 48-hour curfew across parts of northern Jos in an effort to restore order and prevent further escalation. However, despite these restrictions, many residents—particularly youths—took to the streets in protest. Demonstrators expressed anger over the killings, blocking roads and demanding immediate action from authorities.
Additional reports from nearby areas, including Angwa Rukuba Junction, Eto Baba, and surrounding student residential neighborhoods, indicate that earlier incidents of gunfire on the same day claimed at least 10 more lives. This has raised concerns that the violence may have been more widespread than initially reported.
A humanitarian worker, Alex Barbir, shared a video on social media claiming that the victims were Christians targeted during Palm Sunday observances. Meanwhile, accounts from residents regarding the identity of the attackers remain inconsistent. Some witnesses alleged involvement of Boko Haram militants, while others claimed that armed Fulani militia carried out the assault, arriving on motorcycles, firing sporadically, and retreating toward nearby mountainous terrain.
As of now, security agencies have not released an official statement confirming the perpetrators behind the attack, leaving uncertainty around the incident and deepening fears among local communities.
