Police Officer on Amarnath Yatra Security Duty Killed in Terrorist Attack in Anantnag

A Jammu and Kashmir Police officer deployed for Amarnath Yatra security was killed in a terrorist attack in Anantnag on Wednesday, prompting an extensive security operation across the region.

Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi of the 3rd Battalion of the India Reserve Police was on duty when a terrorist opened fire on him around 12:30 p.m. in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where doctors later declared him dead.

Following the attack, security forces swiftly sealed off the area and launched a large-scale search operation to trace those responsible. The incident occurred amid heightened security arrangements for the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra, one of the country's most significant Hindu pilgrimages.

The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility for the attack. Indian authorities identify TRF as an affiliate of the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). In July 2025, the United States designated TRF as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), citing its involvement in terrorist activities.
