Russian President Vladimir Putin commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative during his speech at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, Russia. Putin expressed support for Modi's efforts to encourage Indians to use products made in India and promote the program. When asked about Russian-manufactured cars, Putin emphasized the importance of using domestically produced vehicles, pointing to India as an example of a country that has successfully implemented such policies under Modi's leadership.
Addressing the forum, Putin mentioned that while Russia didn't have domestically made cars in the 1990s, it does now. He acknowledged that these cars may appear less luxurious than Mercedes or Audi vehicles that were widely imported in the 1990s but stressed that this isn't a significant concern. Putin highlighted the need for Russia to learn from countries like India, which prioritize the production and use of locally-made cars and vessels.

He praised Prime Minister Modi for encouraging the use of "Made in India" products and suggested that Russia should similarly make use of its domestically manufactured vehicles. Putin reassured that using Russian-made automobiles would not violate any WTO obligations, especially for state purchases.Putin also discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and emphasized that he saw no hindrance to Russia's interests in the project.
While the United States joined the initiative at the last minute, Putin believed their involvement was primarily driven by business interests. He viewed IMEC as a valuable addition to Russia's North-South project and emphasized that it would enhance logistics. Putin noted that discussions about IMEC had been ongoing for several years, highlighting its potential benefits for Russia's development.
