SATAT Scheme

The SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme is an initiative launched by the Indian government to promote the use of compressed biogas (CBG) as an alternative and sustainable transportation fuel. The scheme was announced in 2018 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The objective of the SATAT scheme is to address two major concerns in India: waste management and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. It aims to promote the production of CBG from various organic sources such as agricultural waste, municipal solid waste, sewage treatment plant waste, and biomass.

Under the SATAT scheme, the government encourages the establishment of CBG production plants and provides financial assistance to entrepreneurs and companies interested in setting up these plants. The scheme offers financial incentives, including a guaranteed off-take price for the produced CBG, long-term agreements, and capital subsidy for plant establishment. It also facilitates the procurement of CBG by oil marketing companies for marketing and distribution.

The SATAT scheme has several benefits. It helps in reducing India's dependency on imported crude oil by utilizing domestic organic waste resources. It promotes a circular economy by converting waste into a valuable energy resource. Additionally, it helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuel-based transportation fuels with a cleaner and more sustainable alternative.

The SATAT scheme has gained momentum since its launch, with several projects being implemented across the country. It is expected to have a significant impact on waste management, rural development, and the promotion of clean and sustainable energy sources in India.
