Setu Bharatam Yojana, also known as the Setu Bharatam Project, was a government initiative in India launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The project aimed to make all national highways in India free of railway crossings by building railway overbridges or underpasses.
The Setu Bharatam Yojana was announced by the Indian government in the Union Budget of 2016-2017 with an allocated budget of Rs. 102 billion (10,200 crores). The primary objective of the project was to ensure the safe and seamless movement of road traffic by removing the existing railway crossings, which often led to accidents and traffic congestion.

Under this scheme, the government identified and prioritized about 1,500 railway crossings across the country to be replaced by rail overbridges or underpasses. The project aimed to make these crossings safer and more convenient for road users, especially in terms of reducing travel time and avoiding accidents.
The Setu Bharatam Yojana also had a focus on promoting sustainable development and reducing the environmental impact of transportation infrastructure. The project aimed to construct the railway overbridges and underpasses using eco-friendly techniques and materials.
The implementation of the Setu Bharatam Yojana involved coordination between various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Indian Railways, state governments, and other relevant authorities. The project aimed to be completed by the year 2019. It is important to note that my knowledge cutoff is in September 2021, so there may have been further developments or updates regarding the Setu Bharatam Yojana beyond that date.
