In a significant move against online extremism, a Southampton resident, Abdullah Bellil, has been sentenced to six years in prison for distributing terrorist content and promoting extremist ideologies through social media.
According to reports from Kingston Crown Court, Bellil, 29, who holds dual British and Algerian nationality, operated an Instagram account named Deafening Silence, where he shared a large volume of extremist videos. The account had over 1,400 followers and hosted hundreds of posts glorifying the Islamic State (ISIS) and its violent agenda.
Judge Sarah Plaschkes KC described Bellil’s actions as “deeply concerning,” noting that one of his most serious posts — a “call to arms” video uploaded in April 2024 — explicitly encouraged revenge killings at a detention camp. The video, she said, was “horrific in its intent” and posed a serious threat to public safety by attempting to incite violence and radicalize others online.
Bellil pleaded guilty to four counts of distributing terrorist publications and to expressing support for a banned organisation. His online activity was part of a broader pattern of digital radicalisation, where extremist groups exploit social media platforms to recruit and spread propaganda.
Under the court’s ruling, Bellil will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his prison term before being eligible for parole. Following his release, he will remain on an extended licence for one year, ensuring continued monitoring by authorities.
The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by UK law enforcement in tackling the spread of extremist material online. It also serves as a reminder that digital platforms remain a critical battleground in the fight against terrorism, where even seemingly isolated acts of online advocacy can contribute to real-world threats.
