Four Afghan nationals residing in Sweden have been found guilty of the brutal murder of a 68-year-old man, whom they kidnapped in southern Stockholm. They beat him to death after his family failed to meet their ransom demands.
The elderly man was approached near his home in Skärholmen and was reported missing by his family on April 29 last year.
A Swedish court heard how the victim was bound, beaten, and placed in the trunk of a vehicle, where he eventually died from severe bleeding and possibly brain damage.
After the kidnapping, the perpetrators contacted his family via text, demanding a ransom of $45,000 (€42,000) for his release. In the message, shared by the Samnytt news site, they provided a time and place to hand over the money, threatening that if the family was late or involved the authorities, they would "collect the pieces" of their loved one.
It is unclear at what point during the kidnapping the victim died, but his body was discovered two days later by the side of the E4 highway near Jönköping, following his family's missing person report.
Mohamed Musavi, a 34-year-old Afghan citizen, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and human trafficking. The court also ruled that he would be deported from Sweden after serving his sentence, with no possibility of returning.
The total cost of the convicted individuals' legal defense amounted to over SEK 2 million (€180,000), which will be covered by Swedish taxpayers.
