Two Afghan nationals with ties to the terrorist group IS-K are currently on trial in Germany, accused of plotting a terrorist attack on Sweden's parliament with the intent to kill at least ten people.
The older defendant, a 30-year-old, has confessed to the plan during the ongoing trial. He claims he was indoctrinated by the Islamic State and motivated by the Koran burnings in Sweden.
The objective was to kill "at least ten" people inside the Riksdag, though he never acquired any weapons. However, he conducted research on the Riksdag building, according to Sveriges Radio, which is providing direct coverage of the trial.
Both the 30-year-old and his 23-year-old co-defendant were willing to martyr themselves in the attack. Evidence against them includes conversations from the Telegram messaging app.
Investigations reveal that the Afghan suspects were in contact with IS supporters in Iran and the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (IS-K), a group active in Central Asia that is believed to have had a role in orchestrating the plot, according to MDR.
Among the evidence is a conversation where one of the men was advised to shave his beard to avoid attracting attention while planning the attack.
The men were monitored by German authorities as they attempted to purchase weapons from a black market near the Czech city of Karlsbad. This, along with findings on their seized cell phones revealing chat discussions and terrorism plans, led to their arrest in March 2024.
Further searches revealed that the Afghans had been gathering funds to support imprisoned IS members in Syria, transferring money via Iranian banks.
