A Swedish court on Tuesday sentenced a 52-year-old woman, Lina Ishaq, to 12 years in prison on genocide charges, marking the country’s first legal case regarding crimes committed by the Islamic State group against the Yazidi minority.
Ishaq was found guilty of keeping Yazidi women and children as slaves at her home in Syria in 2015. She was convicted of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, according to a statement from the Stockholm district court.
The court also revealed that Ishaq forced the Yazidis, who follow their own religion, to adopt Islam by making them recite Quranic verses and pray multiple times a day. She referred to the victims with derogatory terms such as “infidels” or “slaves.”
Ishaq, who grew up in a Christian Iraqi family in Sweden, converted to Islam after meeting her late husband, Jiro Mehho, an Islamist, in the 1990s. They had six children together.
