KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — For the first time since their 2021 takeover, the Taliban will participate in a U.N. climate conference, according to Afghanistan’s national environment agency.
The conference, COP29, begins Monday in Azerbaijan and marks one of the most significant multilateral events involving the Taliban, who remain unrecognized as Afghanistan’s official government.
The National Environmental Protection Agency announced on social media platform X that a technical delegation had traveled to Baku to attend the event.
Matiul Haq Khalis, the agency’s chief, stated that the delegation aims to enhance cooperation with the international community on environmental protection and climate change. They also plan to highlight Afghanistan’s needs for accessing climate-related financial mechanisms and discuss strategies for adaptation and mitigation.
Experts told The Associated Press that climate change has had severe consequences for Afghanistan, exacerbating challenges due to the country’s geographical vulnerabilities and inadequate climate policies.
