In the final weeks of President Joe Biden's administration, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has announced a new policy that will provide job opportunities to newly arrived migrants with work permits.

On Tuesday, Mayorkas revealed a final rule from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that will allow millions of migrants—many of whom have been released into the U.S. by the Biden administration—to retain their work permits for up to 540 days when renewing them.

Previously, migrants could renew their work permits for only 180 days. For years, Democratic mayors had advocated for the DHS to extend automatic employment authorization for migrants. The rule is set to take effect on January 13, 2025.

In the past year alone, over a million foreign-born workers have gained employment in the U.S., while nearly 800,000 native-born Americans have left the workforce. A Pew Research Center study from July of this year revealed that, as of 2022, more than 30 million legal immigrants and undocumented individuals were employed in the U.S., marking a 20% increase over the last 15 years.
