KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban congratulated Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the rebel group responsible for toppling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, expressing hope that the transition of power in Syria would result in a government reflecting “the aspirations of the people and Islamic values.”

In a statement from the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assad’s regime was criticized as a “source of war and instability” in Syria.

The Taliban also voiced optimism for the establishment of a governance system rooted in Islamic principles.

These remarks come as the Taliban continue to face diplomatic isolation, over three years after taking control of Afghanistan, with no country yet officially recognizing their administration.
