The UK has temporarily halted decisions on Syrian asylum claims amid uncertainty following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

This move aligns with actions taken by other countries, including Germany, Austria, and Sweden, which have also suspended asylum application decisions. The development comes after 13 years of civil war culminated in a coalition of rebel groups taking control of Damascus on Sunday.

A Home Office spokesperson stated: “The Home Office has paused decisions on Syrian asylum claims while we evaluate the current situation. All country guidance related to asylum claims is continually reviewed to address emerging issues.”

The Syrian civil war, marked by the Assad regime’s harsh crackdown on dissent, forced millions to flee the country.
