Three Men Arrested in New York for Allegedly Smuggling 89 Firearms, Including Stolen Weapons, into Canada

Federal authorities in the United States have announced the arrest of three individuals accused of attempting to smuggle a large cache of illegal firearms across the U.S.-Canada border. The suspects—identified as Malik Bromfield, Faizan Ali, and Kamal Salman—have been charged with multiple offenses related to the transportation of 89 firearms, including at least 17 reported stolen weapons, intended for illegal export to Canada.

The arrests were announced by Jay Clayton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, alongside James C. Barnacle Jr. of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bryan DiGirolamo of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Following their arrest, all three defendants appeared before Judith C. McCarthy in federal court in White Plains, where they were ordered detained.

According to prosecutors, the suspects were allegedly transporting over 80 firearms, including short-barreled rifles and stolen guns, with the intention of moving them out of the country illegally. Authorities emphasized that disrupting illegal arms trafficking remains a top priority to prevent dangerous weapons from reaching criminal networks.

The investigation began on May 7, 2026, when officers from the New York State Police initiated a traffic stop on a white Ford Explorer traveling near State Route 90 after observing multiple traffic violations. During the stop, troopers encountered Bromfield, Ali, and Salman, whose conflicting and evasive answers reportedly raised immediate suspicion.

During questioning, Faizan Ali allegedly consented to a roadside search, during which officers discovered an expired Pakistani national driving permit hidden on his person. The permit had reportedly been issued to an Afghan national under a different name, further intensifying concerns among investigators.

A police canine later alerted officers to the vehicle, prompting a more thorough search. Inside the SUV, troopers found an unusually heavy suitcase that contained a substantial cache of firearms, leading to the immediate arrest of all three suspects.

Federal authorities stated that the case highlights ongoing efforts to combat cross-border weapons trafficking and ensure that illegal firearms do not end up in the hands of dangerous criminal organizations.
