TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisian authorities have reported the rescue of 64 migrants from a boat that capsized off the eastern Mediterranean coast after running out of fuel.
According to the national customs agency, maritime patrols reached the capsized vessel near Mahdia on Friday evening and rescued 64 people of various nationalities. No fatalities were reported.
The customs agency stated that the migrants were attempting to cross illegally by boat towards European territory.
Preliminary investigation results indicate that the migrants likely departed from an unnamed neighboring country, believed to be Libya.
The migrants were transported to the port of Chebba, located 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of Sfax, for further investigation.
In 2024, over 30,000 migrants left Libya and reached Italy, as reported by the UNHCR. The agency noted that 61% of those arriving by sea to Italy were from Libya, followed by 32% from Tunisia.
