On Monday, Turkey announced that it is actively working to safeguard its national interests after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, impacting billions of dollars in trade and causing turmoil in global markets and currencies.
Trump is enforcing a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, a 10% tariff on Canadian oil, and a 10% tariff on imports from China. Analysts predict this could slow global economic growth and raise prices for American consumers.
"We can play the game as long as they want," Trump said, as Canada and Mexico responded with retaliatory tariffs, and China prepares its own countermeasures.
Trump also reiterated his threat to “soon” target Europe, Turkey’s largest export market.
“It seems the new U.S. administration has started using tariffs as a potent policy tool following the elections,” said Trade Minister Ömer Bolat on Monday.
"In response to these retaliatory actions, we will continue our efforts to defend our country's interests and achieve our objectives," Bolat stated during a press conference in Trabzon, a city in northeastern Turkey.
Global stock markets and currencies fell sharply on Monday amid concerns that the tariffs could spark an economically damaging trade war. The move is expected to increase the prices of various products worldwide, particularly in the energy sector.
