NAIROBI, Kenya (Morning Star News) – Last month, Islamists killed an evangelist in eastern Uganda after he led several Muslims to embrace Christianity during an open-air event, sources reported.
David Washume, a 38-year-old from Manga cell, Mungoma Ward, Nabumali town council in Mbale District, was fatally stabbed on April 3 while returning from three days of preaching in the Nalondo, Buwalasi, and Nabumali areas, according to local sources.
Together with fellow evangelist Fred Wepuhulu, Washume incorporated Quranic verses alongside biblical teachings during their sermons, highlighting the divinity of Christ and the humanity of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, said an attendee at the event. Washume delivered a sermon in Nabumali on the final day of their outreach.
“On the third day, the crowd had grown, and he urged listeners to renounce sin, to ‘put sin to death’ in their lives by identifying with Christ and rejecting Satan. The crowd responded with songs lifted to heaven,” the attendee, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, shared. “Many responded, including several Muslims who accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. However, some Muslims began protesting loudly, prompting the two evangelists to leave and take refuge in a friend’s house.”
Wepuhulu recounted that on the night of April 3, as they were returning to Nabumali around 10 p.m., they were confronted by assailants.
“As we approached our village, three masked men wearing Muslim attire, speaking Arabic, stopped us and demanded our bags,” Wepuhulu told Morning Star News.
The attackers found both Bibles and a Quran in Washume’s bag, he said.
“One of them shouted in our local language, ‘They are the ones, kill them!’” Wepuhulu recalled. “I realized we were facing militant Muslims. I struggled with one attacker who grabbed me, but I managed to escape. Unfortunately, my friend was held by two men and couldn’t get away. I reached home terrified.”
Moses Kutosi, chairperson of the local council 3 in Nabumali Town Council, said he received a call at 6 a.m. the following day informing him of a body found near a Bible college chapel.
“When I arrived at the scene, I found my friend Washume’s body lying in a pool of blood,” Kutosi told Morning Star News. “I was shocked and fearful, and I immediately called the police, who arrived several hours later.”
Washume’s body was taken to Mbale city mortuary for a postmortem examination, Kutosi added.
A relative described the victim’s wounds as being on his neck and chest.
“The knife used in the attack was left at the scene, along with a note written in Arabic that said, ‘You infidel, you will meet Allah in judgment,’” the relative said.
