Ugandan Muslim Cleric Apologises After Controversial Ebola Remarks

Ugandan Muslim cleric Sheikh Abdul Hamid Kalungi has publicly apologised to the Catholic and Anglican communities after facing widespread criticism over remarks celebrating the cancellation of this year’s Uganda Martyrs pilgrimage to Namugongo due to Ebola concerns.

The apology came over the weekend after a video of Kalungi’s earlier sermon spread across social media, prompting accusations of religious intolerance and hostility. In the viral clip, he expressed gratitude that the Ebola outbreak had disrupted the annual pilgrimage and even prayed that a similar event would prevent future celebrations.

Following the backlash, Kalungi retracted his comments and acknowledged that his words were inappropriate. He offered a direct apology to those who were offended, particularly Catholics, Anglicans, and everyone affected by his remarks.

“I saw the need to withdraw that message. What I said was inappropriate for that moment. I apologise to everyone who has been hurt by my words, especially the Catholics, the Anglicans, and the petitioners,” Kalungi said.
