A 26-year-old man who sexually assaulted a woman in Gloucester earlier this year has been sentenced to two years in prison, following proceedings at Gloucester Crown Court.

Abdulla Ali was sentenced on Thursday, 11 December, after the court heard disturbing details of the incident, which took place in the late hours of 28 July. According to the prosecution, Ali approached a woman he did not know as she was walking home alone at around 11 pm after a night out. The woman was described as being unsteady on her feet and in a vulnerable state.

CCTV footage presented to the court showed Ali engaging the woman in conversation before deliberately leading her away from her intended route home. At one point, the victim collapsed out of the camera’s view. Ali was then seen crouching over her. The court was told that he left the scene briefly, returned shortly afterwards, and forcibly pulled the woman to her feet before leading her away once again.

Prosecuting barrister Simon Burns told the court that Ali had taken advantage of a particularly vulnerable woman. He stated that Ali ejaculated onto the victim’s trousers and later admitted in his pre-sentence report to touching her private parts without consent.

During police interviews, Ali denied sexually assaulting the woman and claimed that his actions were motivated by a desire to help her. When questioned about the presence of his DNA on her clothing, Ali told officers that he became sexually aroused and involuntarily ejaculated.

Ali was initially charged with attempted rape. However, on 8 October, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of sexual assault. The agreed facts of the case included that he led the victim away against her will and deliberately masturbated over her.

Following sentencing, Ali offered an apology to the victim. The court was informed that he is an asylum seeker from Egypt and had no previous criminal convictions in the United Kingdom.

His Honour Judge Rupert Lowe sentenced Ali to two years’ imprisonment. In addition, Ali will be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years. The court also heard that he would be recommended for deportation at the conclusion of his custodial sentence.
