Illegal migrant crossings of the English Channel have surged to record levels since the beginning of the year, despite the left-wing Labour government’s commitment to resolving the crisis.
In under three months, more than 5,000 unauthorized migrants have reached British shores after making the journey across the Channel in small boats launched from France.
A BBC analysis reveals that the number of crossings this year marks the highest ever recorded for this period since the government began tracking such data nearly a decade ago.
On Saturday alone, 241 migrants arrived, bringing the total for the year to 5,512. In contrast, by this time last year, 4,306 had crossed illegally. By March 22, 2023, the figure stood at 3,683, while in 2022, 3,836 migrants used the same route to enter Britain.
The 28% rise in illegal crossings compared to last year raises further concerns about Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s ability to fulfill his pledge to tackle the crisis.
